The first Anheuser-Busch brewery opens in St. Louis.

1899
Leftover grain from the brewing process first recycled for animal feed.

1947
August A. Busch Memorial Wildlife Area is established near St. Louis for preservation and public use of 7,000 acres of natural habitat.

1953
First air-emission-control equipment is installed at St. Louis brewery.

1959

The Anheuser-Busch brewery in Tampa opens a hospitality center. Amid lush, tropical gardens, guests experience exotic birds and the Busch family's animal collection.

1965
First significant reduction in amount of aluminum used in cans.

1970
"Our Pledge and Our Promise," a commitment to environmental responsibility, written by August Busch Jr.

Busch Gardens Tampa Bay becomes the first zoological park to breed the roan antelope. Over the next decade, the park will receive American Zoo and Aquarium Association recognition for successfully breeding more than 10 species of African animals.

1972
First reduction in amount of glass used in bottles.

1978
Anheuser-Busch Recycling Corporation is founded.

1979
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay becomes the first zoological park to breed the yellow-collared macaw. Over the next two years, the park will receive breeding awards from the American Zoo and Aquarium Association for more than eight species of birds.

1980
SeaWorld California is the first zoological park to breed emperor penguins outside of the Antarctic.

1981
First significant environmental audit conducted (Columbus Brewery).

1982
Busch Gardens Tampa Bay - in collaboration with Parrot Jungle - becomes the first zoological institution to breed the Lear's macaw, an endangered species from Brazil.

1985
Company’s first Bio-Energy Recovery System (BERS) goes into operation at its New Jersey yeast facility. This process converts leftover water into renewable energy to help power the facility.

First successful killer whale birth in the care of humans takes place at SeaWorld Florida. Eight years later, the whale will give birth herself.

1987
Funding is provided to the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, which has helped preserve 1.8 million acres of wildlife habitat.

1989
SeaWorld California and the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute rely on techniques they pioneered in 1986 to help clean oil from sea otters after the Valdez oil spill.

1991
Environmental Management System launched, based on International Chamber of Commerce Business Charter for Sustainable Development.

First brewery Bio-Energy Recovery Systems installed at Jacksonville and Baldwinsville.

1992
Diameter of aluminum can lids reduced by 1/8 inch, saving 21.5 million pounds of aluminum annually.

SeaWorld California is the first zoological park to conduct a flight feather transplant on an endangered brown pelican.

1993
Anheuser-Busch recycles one aluminum can for every can used in beer production.

Cartersville Brewery opens featuring comprehensive environmental technology systems, including a Bio-Energy Recovery System and land application farm.

First Environmental Quality Manual issued

The SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Environmental Excellence Awards program is honored by the American Zoo and Aquarium Association with a Significant Achievement in Education award.

1995
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute opens a hatchery, which breeds and releases more than 350,000 juvenile white sea bass annually.

Busch Gardens receives an Outstanding Commitment to Recycling award from the Solid Waste Association of North America.

1995
Busch Gardens animal-care specialists, in collaboration with the Australian Koala Foundation, travel to Australia to map existing koala habitat, gathering data crucial to the species' long-term survival.

1996
List of 23 environmental requirements is endorsed by the Environmental Policy Committee and scheduled for implementation through 2000.

Installation of Bio-Energy Recovery Systems complete at six breweries.

Anheuser-Busch International begins conducting environmental audits in overseas breweries.

1997
Company receives the National Wildlife Federation's Conservation Achievement Award.

First installation of a Bio-Energy Recovery System overseas at company’s brewery in Wuhan, China.

SeaWorld California and the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute rescue and rehabilitate Wrong-Way Corrigan, a male Pacific green sea turtle. Hubbs releases the turtle and monitors his progress via satellite to learn about the elusive habits of male sea turtles.

1998
After her rescue and 14 months of expert care at SeaWorld California, J.J. the gray whale is successfully released into her native California waters.

1999
Anheuser-Busch receives the Ron Brown Award for Corporate Leadership in Environmental Excellence.

Anheuser-Busch receives The Conservation Fund's National Stewardship Award.

2000
Environmental Management System fully implemented at all facilities. Solid waste reduction programs have achieved substantial improvements through employee efforts. The amount of waste sent to landfills declined 11 percent per dollar of sales from 1995 to 2000.

2001
Breweries establish leak detection program to identify and repair compressed air leaks to save energy.

Company receives Business Partners Conservation Award from the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation for wildlife habitat conservation.

2002
Company receives the Green Globe Award from the Rainforest Alliance for its commitment to supporting important environmental education, outreach and research.

2002
Company forms Water Council to track information regarding water and watershed quality, water supply and climate change.

2003
SeaWorld/Busch Gardens Conservation Fund created to help support wildlife and habitat conservation efforts around the world.

Company receives the Vision For America Award from Keep America Beautiful.

Anheuser-Busch Recycling exceeds 800 million pounds of recycled aluminum cans collected.

Company again shrinks can lid size, reducing annual purchases of aluminum by 20 million pounds.

Company receives Kodak American Greenways Award for protecting nation’s watersheds.

Company forms Energy Council.

Company inducted into EPA’s WasteWise Hall of Fame for reducing, reusing, recycling and buying recycled materials.

Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified Technology Center completed in St. Louis.

SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks begin using 100 percent post-consumer recycled content napkins.

Fort Collins brewery wins Gold Award from the City of Fort Collins Climate Wise Program.

Cartersville brewery wins Wild Turkey award from the Wildlife Habitat Council for conservation efforts.

Merrimack brewery certified by the Wildlife Habitat Council for managing its land to benefit wildlife, including conserving bald eagle habitat.

Williamsburg brewery receives the Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence.

Fort Collins brewery begins using biodiesel in vehicles.
